Following the National Area Service obtained Herbert Lore's Natural stone Tree House, aka The actual Painted Wilderness Inn, they earned NPS builder Lyle Bennett to redesign the building. Bennett envisioned a remodeled Inn, designed in the Pueblo Rebirth Style, and finished with faux adobe that would reflect back to visitors the actual colors of thePainted Desert upon which the buildingsat.

In the Dining room and Lunch Space she chosen Hopi designer Fred Kabotie to paint decals depicting scenes from Hopi existence. In each and every room, she choose a color scheme that mimicked the outside views from the building.
ThePainted Desert Inn at the Petrified Mend continued to serve travelers along Route 66 till 1962 when the Park Service constructedthe current Painted Wilderness Visitor Center Complex. Soon after, Option 66 was removed, since Interstate40 changed its footprint throughout most of Arizona.
